The question of decoration arises before me after each completion of the next embroidery.

By the way, lately I refuse to use glass more and more often, because I want to see the embroidery, the volume of its threads, the play and transition of colors and shades. Glass makes the same embroidery “flat”, turning it into an ordinary picture, it seems to me.

We will need the following materials:

  1. The embroidery itself, of course.
Fabric for the back (about the size and color selection will tell you about below in the description of work).
Material for lining under the embroidery. The best way to use fleece. But you can also use sintepon. The main thing that the color liner material coincided with the color of the canvas, which embroidered.
  2. Furniture fiberboard (the kind used in the manufacture of furniture). On it we will stretch the embroidery.
  3. Heavy cardboard, on which we will stretch the fabric for the backdrop. For this kind of cardboard I used cardboard from under the box. Cardboard, which is used for children’s art, in this case is not suitable.
  4. Tinfoil and regular craft cardboard (which is used for children’s art). We will use them to make the shapes of the oval.
  5. Strong thread for making the pendant. I used very thick cotton yarn for knitting.
  6. Decorative lace or thread to make it.

And as working tools will be needed:

  1. Pencil, ruler
  2. Sewing scissors, scissors, office scissors.
  3. sewing needle and sewing thread under the color of canvas and fabric for the back, thimble.
  4. More sewing thread, but thick enough. Their color does not matter.
  5. Needle needle (you can use the thickest and strongest sharp needle you can find at home instead of an awl).
  6. A crochet hook, if you think of knitting a decorative lace yourself.
  7. A knife to cut pressed cardboard and furniture fibreboard.
  8. A husband to do the hard physical work )).
  9. Sewing machine. You will need it only once. But this operation can also be done by hand.

Step 1: We make an oval pattern.

For this I like to use tracing paper, because it is transparent. This allows you to put the tracing paper on the embroidery and estimate the size of the work.

On tracing paper first mark a rectangle (in it we will then fit our oval).
Accurately measure the height and width of the rectangle, so it was flat.
Cut it out and attach it to our embroidery to make sure it is the right size.

Fold our rectangle in half, then again in half.
And mark the future oval with a pencil:

We cut out and transferred our oval from tracing paper to ordinary craft cardboard (which is used for children’s art). Just such a cardboard template will be more convenient in further work.

Step 2: We make a basis for stretching the embroidery and for the backdrop.

To do this, using our cardboard template and a pencil, we transfer the necessary oval shape to:

  • furniture fiberboard – on it will be stretched embroidery
  • Heavy cardboard – for the backdrop.

Cut out. Here I have asked my husband to help me cut out the oval on the furniture fiberboard, because he is very thick.

We won’t need our oval made of regular craft cardboard (it’s the thinnest of all) anymore. So we put it away and forget about it (and about the tracing out of tracing paper as well).

In our hands we should have two pieces of cardboard:

  1. The furniture fiberboard (the thickest one) will be used for embroidery. Let’s give this fiberboard the name of board #1.
  2. Dense cardboard (such as from under the box) will go on the back. This cardboard let’s call it #2.

Step 3: Making the basis for the hanger.

On cardboard #1 we mark out the holes for the hanger.
We make these holes by means of awl (and husband )) ). ).
Pull through the thread pendant with a needle.

Very important point! Pull the thread pendant through so that the ends of the thread remain on the “wrong” side of the cardboard. The side we see in the photo will be the “front” side.

We put aside this piece with a thread pendant, and start working on the back.

Step 4: Drawing the back piece.

For this we take cardboard blank 2 and stuff for the backdrop.
We put the cardboard on the fabric and, having separated from the edges of the cardboard oval by about 5 centimetres, make a line, according to which we are going to cut out the fabric. If the fabric-back has a pattern, it is taken into account when cutting, so that everything would be even and beautiful.
Cut out with tailor’s scissors.

We take our cut out fabric and along its edge we put usual stitches (forward needle), giving no more than 1 cm from the edge. The size of each stitch is about 7-10 mm. Put these stitches all around the perimeter of our “oval”. And use a fairly thick thread for this (color does not matter). There is no need to fasten the thread. You should leave a large tip of thread to make it easy to pull and fasten.

A small digression about the choice of fabric for the back.
Despite the fact that this is the back piece, you have to be more creative in choosing fabric. Of course, you may think, why? After all, the backdrop is not visible anyway. But it seems to me that the whole piece should be in harmony.

When choosing a fabric for the backdrop, we are guided by our artistic vision and creative inspiration.
