What is interesting about the technique
There is a version that fishermen in North Africa were the first to invent this type of knitting. They often had to mend nets, and the best tool for this turned out to be a long hook. Decades later, the technique began to be used in needlework, and in the 19th century it became popular in Europe. THIS

INTERESTING! Although the knitting is called “Tunisian”, it is not limited to the country of the same name. The technique was used by Afghan craftswomen, Englishwomen and Frenchwomen, Italians and Spaniards.

Needlewomen who knit long, long and often know that needles are more economical in terms of yarn consumption. However, in the ranking of the most economical techniques the Tunisian technique takes the first place (it uses 20% less yarn compared to spokes).

The knit is very dense. The technique is suitable for plaids, sweaters, cardigans, coats, bedspreads, rugs, decorative pillowcases, etc. Unlike other knitwear, products made by the Tunisian technique, do not stretch after the first or second or after the tenth wash. You can not even make a lining on the sleeves of outerwear.

In the process of knitting a thing does not need to turn over, transitions to the next rows are performed on the right side. It is necessary to monitor the tension of the thread during the work. It should not be too tight, but also not too weak. To get accustomed to tunic knitting, start by practicing on small pieces, and then move on to solid pieces.

Tools and yarn
At first glance, Tunisian knitting schemes look confusing and complicated. Beginner needlewomen may be frightened and give up the idea – to knit something with this technique. There is no need to be afraid, because everything is simple. Let’s talk about what tool is used.

Crochet .
To master this technique, you need to acquire a special hook. It is long (up to 45 cm) and resembles a needle with a hook on one end and a fixer on the other. Thanks to the fixer, the loops do not come off or get lost in the process.

Some articles are too wide and do not fit even on a 45-cm hook. For these purposes, there are special models with a fishing line, on the end of which a hook is fixed. The hook itself in them has a standard length – about 15 cm. Therefore, it is easy for craftswomen to get used to such a tool.

The most unusual is a double-sided tool. It is suitable for knitting multicolored items or circular knitting. If the thing is voluminous, circular models are used. They are the same as circular needles, connected by fishing line, but instead of spokes on both ends are hooks.

Yarn
It can not be said that for Tunisian knitting any particular yarn is suitable. In general, you can use any yarn, even bamboo and viscose. If in other techniques they stretch, lose their shape, in Tunisian they will not be deformed. Too thick yarn is undesirable, the fabric is already dense.

Knitting basics
First we knit in the standard forward direction: from right to left, and then in reverse. A chain of air loops (for simplicity, we will call them abbreviated GP) is the beginning of any product. It turns out that in the first row the loops are gained, in the second – closed, in the third – gained, in the fourth – closed, and so on. There must always be one loop left on the hook after the even-numbered rows are done.

The principle of knitting is as follows:
Make a chain of BP.
Hook inserted into the last loop, pull out a new one, but do not discard, and leave it on the tool. Proceed in the same way with each cast-off stitch. How many initially we have dialed a VP, the number of loops after the row should turn out.
The next step is the most difficult for beginner needleworkers. Grab the working thread with the hook and pull it through the two loops. If you look at the work now, you will notice that there are columns between the loops.
Next, we again get stitches and repeat the whole process.

TIP: Don’t make the loops too tight, as you won’t be able to pull the thread through them easily. Do not loosen the loops too much, or the knitting will be ugly.

At first it will be unusual, you might get confused: dropping the loops, losing them or forgetting to knit them. But with time you will get used to it, and everything will start to work out.
